Alexander Prentiss is a cheerful clinical psychologist hiding the scars of abuse by his alcoholic father. Rebecca Stoller decides to become a nurse after her mother dies of cancer. With naive hope they are married. Then Rebecca's desire for children is thwarted by infertility. Alex's career is jeopardized by his own nervous breakdown.
